The Acceleration
Capability curves are steeper than institutional response curves. The gap is the danger.
Civilizations do not collapse from the speed of progress. They collapse from the gap between progress and response.
The defining feature of this moment is not that machines are getting smarter. It is the rate. Capability curves in frontier AI now double on timescales that legislatures, courts, schools, unions, regulators, and families cannot match. The gap between what the technology can do and what our institutions can absorb is widening every quarter.
Acceleration is not, in itself, a moral fact. Printing accelerated. Electricity accelerated. Antibiotics accelerated. What makes this acceleration different is that the artifact being accelerated is cognition itself, the substrate every human institution is built on top of. When you accelerate the foundation faster than the building, the building cracks.
We are watching the cracks form in real time, in classrooms, in courtrooms, in newsrooms, in hiring pipelines, in the basic ability of an ordinary person to tell a real photograph from a manufactured one. Each crack on its own is survivable. The pattern is not.
This chapter records the velocity, not to glorify it and not to panic about it, but to make it impossible for any future reader to claim that no one saw the rate at which the ground was moving.
